Marche: between Adriatic Sea and Apennines
The region in Central Italy on the Adriatic coast doesn’t stand out due to famous holiday attractions, but it rather shows itself as peaceful and unspoiled area. Nevertheless – or just therefore – the rustic villages, the cultural little towns and the picturesque beaches are more than attractive.
As for geography the Marche consist of three parts: The narrow, but densely populated coast with the capital city Ancona is primarily interesting for vacationers. The sparsely populated interior, however, is characterized by a wonderful hilly country and cities such as Urbino and Ascoli Piceno, which are significant in terms of cultural history. Beyond there is rising up the Apennines that marks the border with the regions Umbria and Abruzzi.
