Flowerage & museums in Meran

During a holiday in Meran you shouldn’t miss a promenade through the small but nice old town: passing medieval houses and art nouveau villas, well-kept gardens, boardwalks decorated with flowers, beautiful churches and old city gates.

The spa hotel - in German called "Kurhaus" - is a wonderful art nouveau house on the Passer promenade and it is a landmark of Meran. Today it is used as general purpose building for festivals, exhibitions, meetings and gala dinners. Some parts of the estate dates back to the 19th century, others were built between 1912 and 1914. The most beautiful part is probably the Pavillon de Fleurs.

The flowerage in the Gardens of Trattmansdorff Castlea very special experience. The terraced gardens cover an area of more than 8.5 hectare and there are growing and blooming countless trees, shrubs and flowers from all over the world. In the center there is located a lily pond, which is often used as impressive background for events. Walks, pavilions, a viewing platform and special guided tours complete the offer.

In Meran there are several interesting museums: The Touriseum is housed in the premises of Trauttmansdorff Castle and illustrates the history of tourism in South Tyrol. The Women’s Museum “Evelyn Ortner” in the old town is dedicated to women’s development in different epochs and in the Municipal Museum there are exhibited finds from primitive times till now.

Moreover the spa town doesn’t lack in churches. One of the most important sacred buildings is the gothic parish church, which is dedicated to St Nikolaus and decorated with impressive frescoes and a beautiful statue of the saint. The parish church of St Vigilius and the Holy Ghost church are worth seeing, too. Moreover in Meran there are places of worship for other denominations, for example an evangelic and an orthodox church and a synagogue.

Last but not least there should be noted also the many castles in and around Meran, which testify to the long history and the importance of the city. Today many castles are privately owned and are used as hotels or restaurants. Some are open to the public, for example the Prince’s Castle and its museum.
