Cycling & mountain biking
If you think of cycling and Italy you probably have in mind the legendary “Giro d’Italia”. As regards cycle races or successful bike pros Italy can absolutely be characterized as cycling nation. However the bicycle routes, above all those in the big cities, are rather expandable.
There a bicycle is more a means to escape traffic jams. Between typical culture lovers and bathers cycling tourists are still quite rare. Nevertheless during the last year the potential of cycling tourism has been recognized and in many places there are created suitable offers.
For instance in Ravenna, Modena or Mantua there are some nice bicycle tracks and Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna is considered as one of the biker-friendliest towns.
For ambitious mountain bikers we recommend the territories in the north of the country, in South Tyrol, Trentino and around Lake Garda. Between mountains and valleys they will find various summit tours and exiting downhill trails.
If you rather prefer more pleasant activities and if you want to enjoy the landscape without being out of puff, you may choose for instance the Po Valley, Tuscany, Umbria or the isles Sardinia and Sicily. There you will discover not only flat and undulating routes, but also many pretty old towns.
